San Marcos may have a different City Council than in 2016, but the importance of horses to the City remains steadfast, as re-recognized in the 2025 Proclamation of the Day of the Horse.

TOVEA and HHC members showed up all smiles to sport their support for Council's horsey endorsement, which was announced by Mayor Rebecca Jones and nearly overshadowed by the appearance of Bunny the Celebrity Mini-Horse in City Council Chambers on May 13, 2025.

We're so proud of this recognition by San Marcos' Mayor and Council, which speaks to the effectiveness of our horse advocacy activities and the community support behind our efforts. Thank you Mayor Jones and City Councillors!

We can't say it any better than the Proclamation itself, which reads:

Proclamation

The San Marcos City Council hereby recognizes the

Day of the Horse

Whereas, horses and equestrian activities have long been a vital part of the cultural, historical, and recreational life of communities across the United States, and are deeply woven into the fabric of the City of San Marcos, enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike; and

Whereas, the horse stands as a living symbol of our shared history, representing the legacy of exploration settlement, agriculture, and transportation that shaped the development of both San Marcos and the United States as a whole; and

Whereas, the presence of horses in San Marcos has profoundly influenced the community’s economy, history, and identity, serving as a cornerstone of local traditions, commerce, and recreational pursuits that continue to thrive today; and

Whereas, horses have contributed to San Marcos’ sense of uniqueness and local identity, from those stabled at homes and equestrian facilities to the presence of a public horse park; and

Whereas, horses and equestrian recreation are essential to maintaining a high quality of life within our community, promoting healthy lifestyles, and significantly contributing to the economic, employment, and environmental well-being of San Marcos and the greater region.

Now therefore, we, the City Council of the City of San Marcos, do hereby proclaim May 13th as the Day of the Horse in the City of San Marcos, and encourage all citizens to recognize, appreciate, and celebrate the contributions of horses to our community’s past, present, and future.
